An oximeter, also known as a pulse oximeter, is a small, portable, and handheld medical device used to measure a person’s blood oxygen level and pulse. It usually attaches to the person’s finger and detects the saturated oxygen level in the blood. A pulse oximeter can easily detect any minute changes in the level of blood.

Pulse Oximeter Uses:

A pulse oximeter can be used in various aspects so following are its uses:

  • The basic and primary use of an oximeter is to check whether your blood is well-oxygenated or not.
  • Pulse oximeters are used for monitoring the oxygen levels of individuals with respiratory conditions for example asthma, pneumonia, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Athletes and trainers use oximeters to measure their oxygen levels during their athletic performance.
  • Oximeters are helpful in measuring the patient’s oxygen saturation after any surgery or during their recovery phase.

How To Use Pulse Oximeter?

Using a pulse oximeter is usually a straightforward process. So here is a quick guide on how to use a pulse oximeter:

  • Check the device if it has sufficient battery.
  • Wash your hands properly to ensure the clean use of the oximeter.
  • Place the finger inside the slot, usually an index or middle finger is used. Make sure that no artificial nails or nail polish are on, which can interfere with the readings.
  • Wait for the reading to show on the monitor while remaining still.
  • Review the results. Usually, the oxygen levels are presented as a percentage. The normal range is between 95% to 100%. Check the pulse rate too.
  • After completing your process, turn the oximeter off.

Fingertip Pulse Oximeter Prominent Features:

A pulse oximeter is composed of various features that enhance its usability and functionality. It shows the measurement of oxygen saturation along with the pulse rate measurement. Many oximeters display a graphical representation of the pulse signal, called as plethysmograph wavelength. It has a digital display option for readings. Some brands may offer bright LED screens or touchable screens that make reading easier and more bright.

Accuracy Affect Factors:

The ranges show us the efficiency of the transport of oxygen away from your heart, through the blood. However, the accuracy of the reading can be affected by certain conditions including poor circulation of blood, skin tone, skin pigmentation, and even skin temperature.
